|Em Turner Chitty is the Acting Director of ELI. At a time of transition, she seeks to strengthen ELI’s core identity as a provider of academic English language preparation while also expanding ELI’s capacities in remote learning and community service. Before coming to ELI, she taught English at VPI, the Istituto Americano in Florence, Italy; TASIS of Switzerland, and PSTCC in Knoxville, and as a private tutor and editor. She is the author of How We Really Talk: Using Phrasal Verbs in English. She has a master’s degree in English literature from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and a master’s in public administration from the University of Tennessee.

The chance to help young students on their individual paths to good futures.
What advice do you give to new ELI students?
Dive into English as if it were a pool. Surround yourself with English. Find friends, join clubs, talk to yourself in English as you walk down the street. Immersion works.
